Perception studies on AMR and antibiotic use |
In April and May 2010, EPN did an exploratory study on knowledge, attitudes and perceptions concerning antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use practices among hospital staff in Kenya. The survey was conducted in 22 hospitals in Nairobi and Nyanza provinces in Kenya. Six of the hospitals were Government, nine were private sector and seven were church owned hospitals. The study indicates an awareness of the seriousness of antimicrobial resistance as a national level problem (92.6%), but far less as a problem at the facility level (63.8%). In addition, practices known to promote development of resistance are thought not to be common in these hospitals. The survey was also done by EPN members in 29 hospitals in Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, with funding from ReAct. As in Kenya, the health professionals interviewed consider AMR a more serious problem at the national level than in their immediate practice. 5-7/05/2010: Nairobi workshop |
From May 5th to 7th 2010, EPN and its partner MSH organized a workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance in Nairobi, Kenya. This third AMR workshop, Beyond Awareness: Consolidating Actions for AMR Containment, was a review workshop to share progress on AMR activities and interventions from prior workshops (Moshi 2008 and Kigali 2009) and to make further plans for addressing AMR advocacy and containment issues on AMR. The workshop was attended by 19 participants from 15 countries. The workshop was presented over 3 days, May 5-7, 2010, and included presentations on AMR, tools, reports from participants on progress of workplans, development of new workplans, and revision of EPN tools for addressing AMR. Click here (904.83 kB) to see the workshop report which includes some photos and proposed objectives and country action plans on AMR. This workshop provided amazing insights into the work that is going on in different member institutions. With little or no external funds, members have undertaken a wide range of activities related to curbing the development of resistance, raising awareness and implementing containment actions. The potential to do so much with so little has always been a characteristic of Church Programmes and the AMR Campaign has provided abundant evidence in support of this. 23-27/11/2009: Kigali (Rwanda) workshop on AMR and Infection control |
EPN - with technical support from the USAID supported MSH/SPS programme - conducted a successful Francophone workshop on AMR and Infection Control in Rwanda, from November 23rd to 27th 2009. The workshop was attended by mainly medical doctors and pharmacists from Rwanda, Benin, Togo, DRC, Cameroon, Central African Republic and Chad, 4 participants from MSH/SPS Rwanda and a representative from the Pharmacy Task Force (PTF)/Ministry of Health Rwanda. The USAID programme Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems (SPS) developed an Infection Control Assessment Tool, which provides an approach that can be used by hospital staff to identify and solve infection control problems economically and practically in low-resource health care facilities. Participants shared experiences on AMR and Infection Control from their countries. SPS's Infection Control Self Assessment Tool was applied in a successful field visit to Kibagagaba Hospital in Kigali where the participants covered 4 modules. The participants found the workshop relevant and the ICAT tool very useful and were ready to implement the ICAT in their own settings. Below you can download the workshop presentation, report and other outputs. Click here to see some pictures of the event. Back to AMR Campaign |
