KenyaMore needs to be done in access to and rational use of medicinesThe over-arching message at the Pan African experts meeting on Access to and Rational Use of Medicines held in Nairobi, Kenya was that more needs to be done to ensure RUM and AEM. EPN partnered with Health Action International (HAI) – Africa, to host the two day meeting on 14th and 15th November 2007. The meeting whose them was: “Saving lives and saving money; Making Access to and Rational Use of Medicines a Priority” was held at the hotel La Mada.
The main purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the progress made in access to and rational use of medicines since the development of the essential medicines concept 30 years ago. The participants of the meeting who were members of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Faith-based organizations (FBOs) also took the opportunity to forge links and generate ideas on partnerships to ensure access to and rational use of medicines. This meeting will mainly focus on the budget and activities of the Network for 2007. World Social Forum 200720 Jan 2007 - 8:00am 25 Jan 2007 - 5:00pm Etc/GMT+3 The World Social Forum (WSF) is scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 20th – 25th January 2007. EPN has partnered with Health Action International (HAI - Africa) OXFAM and Actionaid to highlight issues concerning access to medicines including pricing, affordability issues, patents etc. Activities for this session will include the screening of a film – Tiim - on street vendors of medicine in Burkina Faso. There will also be a display of publications from HAI-Africa, EPN, Oxfam and Actionaid. Atelier de Formation sur le traitement du VIH / SIDA , Kenya, novembre 2006Following the success of the HIV/AIDS Treatment Literacy Workshop held in January 2006, a second workshop has been organized from 13th - 18th November 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya. Participants are expected from Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Ethiopia and one French speaking country.The aim of the workshop is to equip church leaders as opinion leaders in the community and as owners of health care institutions to understand the issues around HIV/AIDS treatment and the key role they can play. The pastors, priests and other church leaders involved in their church's HIV/AIDS programme who attend the workshop are expected to commit to going back to their communities and actively using the knowledge and skills they gain. The objective of the workshop was to enhance the knowledge and capacity of church leaders in Africa to deal with HIV/AIDS treatment, related organizational management issues as well as the challenges of making the HIV/AIDS drugs available through the church networks. The results of research undertaken in Kenya in May 2004 to identify starting points was fed back to a group of 42 people from churches, church health services, NGOs, and government organisations.
